Few would disagree with the notion that Nas’ Illmatic is one of the most masterfully executed and influential hip hop albums of our time. The culmination of inspired collaboration between a young Nasir Jones and a cast of producers that reads like an all-time who’s who of hip hop production, it has proven impervious to the test of time. In 2006, its promo video (from circa 1993 or early 1994) resurfaced on youtube. This is nostalgic hip hop footage at its finest.
(Big ups to Miguel for posting it on facebook this morning!)
I don’t know if you’re already into this type of sh*t or just not ready for down with it but shouts to Cam for the knowledge-drop regardless. Lazer Sword reppin’ for that next-shit comin’ out the Bay. Sleep if you want but I’ve only included the first three out of 18 tracks—something for everyone—full mixtape after the J… (Keep in mind the mixtape is old though..)
Anthony Marshall of The Lyricist Lounge got Big Daddy Kane to shoot a documentary last year and honestly, I think it’s really well executed. The first few minutes got me feeling all nostalgic about Brooklyn and I’ve never even been there (nor am I old enough to truly relate) so you know they did a good job.
Whether you grew up at the right time, had to learn your hip hop history later, or even, don’t know shit, this is well worth checking out.
(Gotta love the cameo by E-Dollaz, who looks like he’s about 9 years old: “… I’m in the studio every weekend with my father… it ain’t nothin’..”)
“Although DJ Steve1der’s mix has been in the works for awhile, we’re choosing to look at it as a nice get well soon card to Nate Dogg, who recently suffered his second stroke. Fortunately, he seems to be recovering and is in stable condition. Since we don’t know him personally, we’re thinking that listening to this mix is the ideal way to send good vibes and much appreciation to one of the architects of the modern hip-hop hook. Also, he was partially responsible for “Regulate.” We’ll leave it at that.”
“Fresh” as in new, not fresh as in draped in fly apparel and sporting a clean pair of something. Fresh like.. hopefully you haven’t heard this yet, and are about to be pleasantly surprised. (It depends how old you are I guess…). At the very least you’ll probably like the instrumental track.
More info about the duo known as Menace Clan (and the album that featured this song) after the cut-off…
I don’t know what to say…. Jay E doin’ big things I guess? Rich people are on some other sh*t, by the way, I swear. “Give him a cup of hot salmon broth gravy” and the girl is like “no problem” with 40 minutes to make it happen?? I wouldn’t know where to find that if you gave me a whole day… double u t eff..
It’s not like you can’t find this video on a lot of other blogs right now but no one should really be deprived the chance to behold these sights. Above is a tasteful (at least by my standards, but I grew up with “jiggy era” music videos…) unofficial video for ‘Super Boo’ by Kid Cudi.
We support Jay Electronica. We support Blu. We(—or at least, I—)support Big Sean. We support Kid Cudi (but only post his good songs). We support Dom Kennedy… And the list goes on.. but, it doesn’t go on for much longer…
My point? You should probably check out most of our music posts. Why? Because we love music and that’s basically the only motivation behind us bothering to put these up for you. (Also because—and i could say this 100 different ways but I’ll go the humble route—we don’t have sh*tty music taste.)
^ Jay Electronica is ill. The New Royales are a group consisting of Dj Khalil (Self Scientific), Chin Injeti, Erick Alcock, and Liz Rodriguez. Watch for this release if you’re a Jay E fan.
- Jse (bored as f*ck at work… but it helps that, for some reason, dentistry conferences have the highest concentration of fine girls I’ve ever seen in one place..)
