FREESTYLE FRIDAY: THURSDAY EDITION

January 8th, 2009

CORY GUNZ & MICKEY FACTZ - THE DEAL FREESTYLE

So uh.. what do you think of freestyles? I think they’re pretty cool when dudes aren’t fumbling their words or rhyming on some one syllable “shoe” rhymes with “who” sh*t. In fact I know freestyles are pretty cool and you should know too. Respect the art form or reject an ART form.

But seriously though, the sneakers scattered randomly throughout this video are just too fresh. I mean damn, where can I find those joints? Size 14’s too. They must have gone straight to a secret Nike factory in Japan or something… (Oops did I just let out some sarcasm? My bad.)

Freestyle fridays… coming to a..friday near you. Wamp wamp.

COMMON FREESTYLES IN VANCOUVER

September 25th, 2008

Here’s some footage of Common showing Vancouver some love at his recent show with N.E.R.D. He does pretty well, and even mentions the Vancouver Grizzlies! Big thanks to Glenda for the “exclusive video privileges..”..

DIZ GI-BRAWN

September 23rd, 2008

I slept on this Diz Gibran dude but this is actually a really impressive verse. Click play and see for yourself. I don’t want to call it a freestyle like most would because I think the definition of freestyle has been totally lost over time… either way though, it’s good. [EDIT: Actually it is a freestyle.. especially after the first part]

Also included an interview/video of him from being chosen as HipHopOfficial.com’s artist of the week where he talks about his music and career - after the jump…

BLACK THOUGHT OFF THE TOP

September 6th, 2008

I ‘ve always (always, always) said Black Thought was ridiculously underrated… and I guess it’ll stay that way.

SUPERNAT FREESTYLE

August 28th, 2008

Supernatural is considered one of the best freestylers of all time (up there with Juice, Em and whoever) and this video showcases the reason for that recognition: his skill and showmanship. In this video he tells the crowd he’ll rhyme about whatever they put in his hand, thus proving that none of the lyrics he spits are pre-written and showing off his knack for improvisation.

Did you know that:

Fatlip from The Pharcyde (<– click) started rapping only after seeing an impressive freestyle. Witnessing someone making up complex multi-syllabic rhymes in real time showed him how much intelligence was involved in freestyling, and mc’ing in general, and inspired him to try it himself. (….Random barely-interesting facts are cool…..)
