The other day as I was fishing around for my street tatsujin (translates to masters of the streets; my pick of someone with remarkable and original street fashion sense), I came across Ryo, a Londorer by the #6 exit of Xiemending MRT station. After a few casual greetings and exchange of stickers, I soon realized it would elapse to an unforgettable night.

I was going to call this The L.A.F.’s Adventures in Asia but that’s not quite the case. Actually just Jenn Channg (click to view her blog) went to Asia.. and because she’s so awesome (ha ha) she’s going to share her experiences with us via the LAF. Thanks Jenn! Sounds like it’s going to be a dope trip. Keep ‘em coming… - Jse

WELCOME TO 西門町
Pronounced Ximending. While the usage of the character 町 (ding) is unusual in a Chinese context, it represents a part of a ward in the Japanese municipality system. Ximending is the most important consumer district in the Western district of Taipei; it is a trendy shopping district for young people. Ximending is now called the 原宿 Harajuku a of Taipei. The local bookstores sell Japanese magazines, books, CD albums and clothing, making it a paradise for ハリズ harizu, or Japanese culture adorers.

Like most metropolitan cities, trying to find a public phone in Taiwan has become quite the adventure. I walked along the streets of Ximending and this is what I found. The local graffiti/ street art crew, City Marx with in house writers like Bobo, Cola and Same, has teamed up with its government to beautify the streets of Taiwan.
(This is just a teaser… more photos coming soon!)

‘Faking It’ is a transformational battle against the odds. This episode’s faker is a 20 year-old country boy who is plucked from his natural habitat and given four weeks to make his name in the urban jungle as a graffiti artist—well enough to fool a group of expert judges.

The legendary Roots survived a horrific tour bus crash in Paris, France. They are currently overseas in Europe opening up for Kayne West on his tour. On Nov. 20, while on the road to give one of their amazing shows to a sold-out crowd in Belgium, they were involved in a car accident involving their bus and another passenger vehicle. (A photograph of the damaged tour bus can be viewed by clicking “read more” at the bottom of this post.)

Drummer ?uestlove detailed the crash in a message posted on Okayplayer.com’s new blog:
“In reality the crash was all of about 7 seconds,” the drummer wrote in an email later posted on the site. “But to do a 360 on the highway and end up ramped up (the van that crashed into ours was under our double decker bus) in the air…is…well… a frigging miracle.”
In related news, a video just recently surfaced on YouTube where ?uestlove suggested that the band would be “retiring”. But the band has signed a contract to work as the house band for Late Night starting in March 2009 once Jimmy Fallon assumes hosting duties.

A lot has been written about Daim’s 3-D Graffiti, now some Media Arts and Design students are teaming together to transform a Nintendo Wii console into a spraycan. Wiispray, a prototype which remains under heavy development, is part of a final thesis design project by Martin Lihns at Bauhaus-University in Weimar, Germany.
Wiispray aims to bring its gamers all the thrills of a real-life spraycan without the limitations. It simulates real-life spraycan characteristics and comes with a range of different caps and colours. No word yet on who the sponsor is, but I bet Montana wants the entire pie.

I think Marc Ecko just got schooled.

So you think break dancing was an art form that died in the ‘80s. And so you think you’ve seen it all and the dance isn’t worth five minutes of your time when you are passing through Time Square subway station. You haven’t seen the last of b-boying if you watch this dance documentary as it mines b-boying from underground and proves it is still as alive as any other dance that has ever existed.
