THE DEAD END OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION

August 18th, 2008

So the Adbusters “hipster” article that caused so much controversy (written by: Doug Haddow, read it here) has now also inspired a party. I guess they’re trying to show that they’re unfazed by the article by embracing its title and using it as their own. Or maybe the organizers aren’t like the thousands of hipsters that got all mad about it, and just think it’s a funny name for a party.

Aren’t there like two or three different types of people that get called hipsters right now though? Check out the current issue of XXL or one of those other mags. They have Wale, Kidz In The Hall, Mickey Factz and the Cool Kids in there featured in some article about the “hip(ster) hop” new school or something. (Who stole the term I made up last November, by the way? Everyone, I guess.) I don’t know if those dudes signed up for that (probably not!) but I’m glad I don’t fall into the category based on any of the hipster criteria of either article.

More info about all the “controversy” after the jump…

“HIPSTER: THE DEAD END OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION

We’ve reached a point in our civilization where counterculture has mutated into a self-obsessed aesthetic vacuum. So while hipsterdom is the end product of all prior countercultures, it’s been stripped of its subversion and originality, and is leaving a generation pointlessly obsessing over fashion, faux individuality, cultural capital and the commodities of style. ”

I’m really excited to see how this party turns out, but I also feel that the organizers/DJs (onecoolword, tyler fedchuck & neil hillbrandt) have put themselves in a very precarious situation. This can’t be just some hipster dress-up hipster party where everyone fistpumps away their dedication to irony and pretends to pretend dance. In order for this event to be successful by any measure and assume the role as the perfect exclamation point to the whole debacle - it’s got to be completely off the fucking wall.

If this party doesn’t smash the very idea of “partying” into a million pieces and provide intense, borderline religious experiences for each and every attendee, then I fear it will just further our regression into oblivious po-pomo shruggery.
