A KID NAMED CUDI MIXTAPE

May 19th, 2008

COMING SOON! CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD!

An exclamation mark on “coming soon” despite the fact that I’m weeks late on posting this? Why not? Cudi has put out some heat in the past and shown a lot of potential. So, as surprising to me as it might be, I’m actually looking forward to a new artist’s release right now. Check out the video below (under ‘bonus material’) of him on the freestyle singing/rapping tip. I think dude shows a definite knack for composing melodies—plus a half-decent singing voice even—and the delayed release of this mixtape should prove to be worth the wait. Only time will tell though so keep it locked on the LAF.

THEO & LAH: WE MADE IT

May 18th, 2008

Featuring a nice laid-back (soul sampled?) beat, clean rhyme schemes and good lyrics, this track is worth a few listens for sure. Theo (2nd verse) and his homeboy, Lah (1st verse), definitely did their thing.

It still seems to lack a little something (probably just million dollar production equipment and top-dollar mastering?), as most independently released tracks do, but nothing I can easily identify.

Stay up, Theo!

Drivin’ Down The Block (El-P Remix)

Call me on it, but I think this is better than the original… I always liked Company Flow.

PORTISHEAD x JOE BUDDEN

May 7th, 2008

Here’s a mash-up album of Budden’s ‘Mood Muzik 3′ acapellas and Portishead’s instrumentals from ‘Third,’ mixed by Ill Poetic. No idea why he thought these two would make good collaborators but as far as these things go I thought it was pretty good.

SEAN BELL: THE SHOOT BACK MIXTAPE

May 5th, 2008

Following the recent acquittal of all the officers involved in the Sean Bell tragedy, our friends over at Troubl Media have stepped up and put a lot of time and energy into releasing a mixtape made up of interviews they’ve captured from different Sean Bell rallies. It features powerful words and clean beat selection, and I’d expect no less from the Trouble Media camp. Please check it out below:

“Three police officers killed one man, Sean Bell, and wounded two others, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield. From the night of this social atrocity to the not guilty verdict, emotions have been fierce. Sadness. Anger. Frustration. Disgust. Fear.

Download The Shoot Back Mixtape, or if you would rather stream the audio, check out The Shoot Back Mixtape.

While the politicians give speeches that do little but promote “middle of the road statements,” or, political rhetoric, straddling the political fence as to whether or not the verdict was right or wrong. It was wrong. The people have spoken.

Download the voices and speeches of the public discontent following the verdict. In the words of a protester speaking for Sean Bell: “It’s not about what you do today, but what you do tomorrow.”

TROUBL Media does not promote violence. We promote knowledge. The cover artwork embodies the sentiment of the community as does the sound byte at the end of “No Justice, No Peace,” which is included because it is reflective of the frustration many people have expressed with the police department’s conduct, and the state of the justice system in the United States.

A big shout out to RBT & Alwayswrite, who gathered much of the audio used in the mash-ups. This is truly a TROUBL team effort.

JUSTICE VIDEO FOR ‘STRESS’

May 1st, 2008

Not sure where the inspiration for this came from, but its one of the illest videos I’ve seen in years. Reminds me of La Haine, which you should check for if you haven’t already.
