As for Kid Cudi, in a previous post (click here) I was pretty hyped to hear his mixtape—and I still am because of this Maui Wowie track—but the last two tracks to leak are not his best work. Maybe I just haven’t given them enough of a chance so I’ll let you decide. Either way though, don’t be surprised this summer when people are playing this ‘Maui Wowie’ cut or some future remix of it. (Related: Kid Cudi - Day ‘N Nite (Crookers Remix).)

EDIT:
I’ll tell you right now, dude is no Andre 3000, but he makes some good music. The two cuts in question are starting to grow on me now that I’ve listened for a second time. I think he might be freestyling in a lot of the ‘Spazzin’ track—regardless, the beat suits the nature of his verse. As for the other one, I’m definitely feelin’ the lyrics in the hook and the verse is not bad at all.

NAS’ NEW COVER / ‘BE A NI***R TOO’ MP3

May 29th, 2008

I’m a sucker for this shit. Definitely a believer that on one of these albums he’ll return to form. Drops July 1st.

- Oren

MP3:

For those that are out of the loop and don’t know, Nas is no longer calling the album “Ni***r.” Instead, in a decision that a few haters are calling a “cop-out”, the album will be self-titled. None of that really matters though because the following track showcases Nas, in fine form (at least lyrically—the beat isn’t great), proving that him and Jay will continue to stay on top of their game. Granted, you can’t really say Nas gets better with age, in recognition of the fact that it would be almost impossible for him to top ‘Illmatic.’

DAFT PRIZZY

Are back in the studio.

BONUS:
Some guy took it upon himself to make a Daft Punk Tour DVD of their ‘Alive’ show in 2007. The footage is made up entirely of what he and other fans managed to capture with digital cameras (and other recording devices I’m guessing as the quality is pretty good). You can buy it from the site June 14th. Previews of the footage can be seen here. I’m thinking about having a screening at my place with fake grass and shit.

BONUS BONUS:
Kanye bringing out Daft Punk at the Grammy’s. Yeah this is old but I didn’t see it until recently… I wonder how many people there thought they were just two of his DJs in a pyramid.

PLANET B-BOY (A REVIEW BY: JENN CHANNG)

May 28th, 2008

So you think break dancing was an art form that died in the ‘80s. And so you think you’ve seen it all and the dance isn’t worth five minutes of your time when you are passing through Time Square subway station. You haven’t seen the last of b-boying if you watch this dance documentary as it mines b-boying from underground and proves it is still as alive as any other dance that has ever existed.

ATMOSPHERE: WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS (A REVIEW BY: DANNY KIM)

May 27th, 2008

Atmosphere, the two man duo of Slug (Sean Daly) and Ant (Anthony Davis), are back and hittin’ hard, with their new album ‘When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold’ (WLGYLYPTSG). I’ll be honest, I’ve always had a love/hate for Slug’s raps - mostly because of his weird rhyme schemes and constant coke references - but after listening to ‘God Loves Ugly,’ (2003) it was his story-telling ability that changed my mind and left me wanting more. So with that said, when I first gave this CD a listen a lot of the tracks seemed contrived; almost as though Slug wrote the raps first, then found the beats for them later. However, after listening to this album for about two weeks straight his lyrics really started to take form and I found that there was more to the songs than what appeared on the surface.

M.I.A. COMING BACK WITH THE POWER POWER

May 26th, 2008

I just got back from her show and I’m still a little faded - not enough to do this in all caps though, shouts to Prodigy. He is running this blog shit. I guess all I want to say is I had just about given up on homegirl until tonight. I’ve read a lot of bad press about how M.I.A. is a one trick pony who can’t sing (think I’m co-signing after tonight), can’t rap, and doesn’t actually push any “conscious” agenda whatsoever, she just appears to. I’ve heard people say Santogold is M.I.A. except better. Regardless of any of it, or how much she may rely on (heavvvy) beats and studio mixing, she threw it down tonight and put on an ill show. I’m talking JUNGLE IN THE KLUBBB RAW. I think most people at this point know of her, and know if they like her, but here’s what she opened with:

BUY THE ROOTS’ NEW ALBUM!

May 23rd, 2008

You’re making ?uestlove sad and shit! For real though, he recently poured his heart out on his blog, letting out a lot of his frustrations. I guess when record sales aren’t at the level they rightfully should be at, one can only go so long without feeling discouraged. Presumably, this is especially true when acts like Soulja Boy are out there killin’ it in the sales department.

Speaking of depression, it definitely is a bit depressing to see that real music isn’t as widely popular as mainstream (production-value reliant) club bangers or whatever. That being said though, all this illustrates is that the majority of people right now generally prefer thoughtless, feel good jams over more meaningful laid back music. Ignorance is supposedly bliss, after all. A lot of people listen to music to escape from the world’s problems (and their own), rather than to hear someone summarize the world’s problems for them. Then again, people just like what they happen to like. In some cases they might shy away from an album like this for legitimate(?) reasons, and other times - let’s face it - it’s just a case of bad music taste.

I’m sure ?uesto has shaken off the funk he was in when he wrote all that (at least to some degree), but I’m sending out a big “keep your head up!” to dude anyway. You can’t expect everyone to recognize the real shit - if everyone knew what was up there would be no lames, and therefore, no one cool in comparison. Think about it, a world without cool people? F that noise, everyone plays their role.

NIKE AIR TECH CHALLENGE II

May 22nd, 2008

I can’t say I wanted these when they first came out because like a lot of people, I didn’t watch pansy ass tennis players in 1989, I watched basketball! Actually, that’s a lie, I was four years old. I watched ninja turtles, and if I saw these I would have wanted them. All technicalities aside, this is a sick pair of sneakers and Nike was wise to retro them.

Learning from the mistakes of the 2007 release of the Nike Air Tech Challenge I, where too many “slight” modifications were made to the model, Nike chose to keep this pair as true to the original as possible. The only major difference with this release being that it does not feature any Agassi graphics, as he is no longer sponsored by Nike.

RELEASE INFO:
DATE: 04/2008
NAME: AIR TECH CHALLENGE II (REBEL PACK)
STYLE #: 318408-181
COLOUR: WHITE/HOT LAVA,BLACK,GRANITE
PRICE: $100 USD, $150 CAD
