What Are You Wearing Today?

November 30th, 2007

Apparently people out there actually care, so pick an outfit, practice your pose, set the timer on your camera… and show everyone how steezy you are! And by “everyone,” I mean random dudes on the internet and stuff - you know, if you’re into that kind of thing.

I post sometimes just for the hell of it, the fun of it, getting both positive & negative feedback, and just contributing to a very diverse forum.

Oh, word? That’s pretty cool, I guess.

Edit: I’m not sure how interesting this is but it relates to this post - dude has thoroughly documented his WAYWT career, even has a youtube video of it.

DJ’s We Like: Vancouver Edition

November 26th, 2007

To continue with this audio journey we call ‘DJ’s We Like,’ (most creative title ever right? thanks!) I’ve decided to stay close to home for this one before we move along and hit the Mid-West. Thankfully, Vancouver actually has ill DJ’s, so posting this isn’t just a formality or a favor to some homies or casual acquaintaces - which is nice, because bullshitting isn’t my forte.

And now, without further adieu, meet your tour guides: (in no particular order)

My!Gay!Husband!: Funny name, but dude is no joke when it comes to mixing and party-rocking. Check him out at 1/2 Alive.
Downloads: Back To School Mix (this one is old) - For tons of his new stuff, check out his myspace.

TonyX: More 1/2 Aliveness. He spun at this tradeshow I worked at and it was the first time I heard the ‘Paper Planes’ Remix.
Downloads: 1/2ALIVE RADIO #1, 1/2ALIVE RADIO #2, 1/2ALIVE RADIO #3. Want more? Click here.

Tyler Fedchuk: Never seen him spin because I don’t really go to 1/2 Alive much but his mixes on his website, radiozero.ca, are clean.
Downloads: radiozero podcast #46, radiozero podcast #45, radiozero podcast #43. Click here and here for more.

Paul Devro: www.pauldevro.com - www.salbourg.com
Downloads: Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (PD - Refix) , Dem Franchise Boyz - Steppin’ Out in White Tee, Bombs Over Bagdad (Paul Devro Remix) - Outkast. More: www.pauldevro.com/mp3s.html

And last but definitely not least, The Freshest Kids!
Rico Uno, DJ Seko, Kutkorners, and DJ Marvel:

Check out their night at Century House: Higher Ground Tuesdays and this mix they did for Hunt.FM.

Rico Uno: Doin’ big things…such as working with RockersNYC Records.

Kutcorners: When he’s not behind the decks, catch him behind the counter at Goodfoot Vancouver.

DJ Seko: Been around the Vancouver scene forever. Besides being one of the freshest kids, he’s Jaykin’s DJ.

The Kid Sister

November 25th, 2007

Not J2K’s little sister, this is Dre’s little sister…

I’m currently working on some other posts but I’m not happy with them yet so to satisfy the masses until those are ready, I dug up this old oil painting (sorry, dre!) from my hard-drive. This is from about 4 years ago when Dre’s main focus was photo-realism and stuff. Enjoy!

Hip(ster) Hop… And You Don’t Stop

November 20th, 2007

If you’ve ever been to the kind of club night that one might label “scene,” the subject of this post is nothing new to you. DJ’s have been blending your favourite grimey rap verses with basically any dance music with more than 110 beats per minute (B-More, Electro, House, etc.) for years now. So, you might ask, what’s new? Well, MC’s have actually been rapping over this stuff by their own free will lately. Most notably: Kanye, Lupe Fiasco (sort of) and some lesser known cats like Wale and Mickey Factz. Personally, considering where music is going right now (in large part thanks to the DJ’s nowadays) I’m not surprised at all. The lines between different genres are only becoming more blurry as time goes by.

I like some of these songs and everything but it’s good to keep in mind that this concept isn’t new. I say this partly because mainstream music has already been heading in this direction for a while, and partly because Outkast did this with ‘B.O.B.’ way back in 2000. In any case, it’s all still worth a listen so here are some other artists to check out who’ve been doing similar music: Uffie, Kid Sister, M.I.A., Lady Sovereign (I guess?), Hollywood Holt, and Spank Rock.

Enjoy the downloads below, and feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think.

MP3:
‘Ye raps over Justice Vs. Simian: Kanye West - Young Folks
Factz laces a Daft Punk beat: Mickey Factz - Talk Yo Shit
More Justice: Wale - D.A.N.C.E.
The beat from ‘Gorillaz - Dirty Harry’: Lupe Fiasco - The Gorilla
Telepopmusik (France) - Breathe’: Mickey Factz - Breathe Another Day

November 15th, 2007

With the holiday season fast approaching, and since sharing is caring, Dre and I have decided to share with everyone some DJ’s (and their mixes) that we’ve been feelin’ for the last while.
